Please stop using venous thromboembolism (VTE) outcomes for Pay-for-Performance and Public reporting - Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has been a target for public reporting for more than
a decade. However, numerous examples have shown us that the rush to publicly report
and include VTE events as metrics in pay-for-performance programs have been implemented
before demonstration of their accuracy and validity.1 Unfortunately, the rigorous
study of quality metrics often lags behind the science of public reporting.2,3 Originally,
all VTEs were labeled as patient harm and preventable, and were even called never
events.
